Click HERE for this description of an investigation of the word "durable" I got to engage in with Grade 2 student Charlie. I walk through our investigation and model how we use the "4 Questions" to guide our study. At the end of Part 1 of this story, I leave the reader with an orthographic challenge that Charlie and I ended up addressing in a follow-up session.
In Part 2 (still to come) I will use the content of this investigation as a context for understanding how the orthographic content, tools and practices (including spelling-out-loud orthography!) fit perfectly with recommendations from theories of reading including "Orthographic Mapping" (Ehri, 1998, 2014) and Perfetti’s (2007) "Lexical Quality Hypothesis" and also recommendations from Cognitive Load Theory (Schnotz & Kurschner, 2007; Cooper & Sweller, 1987).
For now, however, why not start by following the footprints of the trail of our investigation of the orthography of "durable."
