Real Spellers

English Makes Sense!

i was recently doing a lesson with a child and came across the word gases.  It seems to me that

gas(s) + es --> gasses.

When I looked it up in a dictionary, it seems that both are considered correct, but gases is clearly the spelling used most often.  Is there an etymological reason for this, or just a learned preference?
