English Makes Sense!

Here is a question as an OG tutor that I haven't been able to answer in my own mind. If I am teaching the word "polish" and one makes the word sum "pole + ish"  "polish" or "pole + ite" or "polite", don't they still need to know the syllable type to read the word synthetically? (They can see the word structure and spell it accordingly.)
