In this newsletter I reflect on the learning I witnessed during return trips Bangkok for a workshop with Fiona Hamilton (A Place For Words) and in Melbourne with Lyn Anderson (Beyond the Word).  I discuss the dynamic I am seeing whereby teachers who arrive at a school that has already committed to SWI  move forward at a surprisingly fast rate. Read how the hard won knowledge base of  teachers and students helps teachers new to SWI dive right in.  

Teachers teaching teachers (upcoming Nueva SWI Summer Institute)

Read about the powerful effect of teachers presenting their learning to participants of SWI workshops as we did in Bangkok -- and as we will do at the Nueva Institute June 26 - 27June 26 - 27 in the Bay Area. Get details on special presentations by expert SWI teachers from Nueva in the Part 2 of this upcoming institute. This includes a break out session in which pre-school teacher Carolee Fucigna and Kindergarten teacher Larraine Ray present on their experiences and lessons with young children while I present to teachers of older students. Other Nueva teachers will present to the full group on their experiences in elementary and middle school, and resident SWI coach Rebecca Loveless will present on Real Script.

  • Nueva School pre-school teacher Carolee Fucigna builds a morphological word web on the base <rain> with her students. I've been dying to share this one for months!
  • An inspiring presentation by a Grade 2 teacher who describes a class project in which they investigate the etymology of students' names. This teacher attended one WW Workshop 2 years ago, and has been going strong ever since.
