My students were wondering about the word <foreign>. We looked it up, and it comes from L. foris to O.Fr. forain to ME. foreyne.

So we have two questions:

  1. How did it get its current spelling?
  2. How do we find things like that out. We looked in Eytmollogy dictionary, regular dictionary, and even the Word Searcher, which had no other word with that spelling and pronunciation combo.

Thanks,

Matt's class.
