English Makes Sense!

Looking up etymonline I found that the word 'edible' is comes from the word 'eatable'. How do I go about writing the word sum for edible? I know that -ible is a suffix so could it be ed + ible? but I don't think that 'ed' is a base....

So it the word sum simply edible or is 'ed' what we call a bound base?
